A Great Gift for ANYONE this Christmas–Only $10!

— 2013 UPDATE – PLEASE READ! —

It has come to my attention that RedBox has changed the way that their gifting works. Instead of buying a set number of codes for a set price (like I did below in 2012), you now only have the option to buy a gift card starting at $10. It looks like they work much like an iTunes card. This post has gained in popularity on Pinterest, and I have gotten questions below, so that is why I wanted o address these changes here.

I still think that a “movie-themed” gift is a great idea. If you want to do something similar and still keep it $10 or under, instead of RedBox you could purchase a $5 Amazon gift card. Amazon Instant Video continues to grow in popularity — Shelton and I use it all of the time to rent movies and watch whole seasons of shows.

Shelton’s Christmas party was last Friday and everyone participated in a gift exchange. The cap was $10, which is not a lot to work with, but I was determined to stay on budget. After browsing in Walgreen’s for half an hour, I decided upon a “movie night” themed gift. I think this would be perfect for ANYONE. Girls, boys, young, old, nieces, nephews, you name it!

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Redbox Promo Codes – 5 codes for $6 from www.redbox.com/gifts
    • 11/20/13: As stated above, RedBox has changed the way they offer gift certificates. Opt for a printable Amazon Gift Card instead!
  • 3 candy boxes – Walgreen’s almost ALWAYS has that “3 for $3″ promotion going
  • Popcorn – one single package for just 99 cents.

Who’s winning this Christmas?

You are.

  4. Great idea! Will definitely be using this holiday season. You could also purchase the candy from Everything $1 if Walgreens doesn’t have a sale going. The dollar stores by us always have those boxes of movie candy.

  5. Great idea! My question: I looked on Redbox website and it sent this rental through text or email. Did you just print it to give? Your picture looks like a gift card. Where did you find the cute envelope that fits it perfectly?

  6. I have a question, so you buy the codes with your credit card right? So when they go to use a code does it also make them slide there card in case they keep it longer then one night? Thought this would be cute and cheap for my co workers but don’t want to pay there late fees lol

Hi Katherine! Thank you for your comment. I’m sure that RedBox addresses this issue on their site. I am almost positive you are correct though — the person renting must be required to scan their credit card in case they incur late fees.

  7. Can you explain what you mean by codes? It would only let me do increments of $25 for the gift cards. I would like to keep it closer to $5. Thanks!

Hi Jamie! I just checked out RedBox’s site and it looks like their gift card increments have increased. Last year (2012) I was able to purchase a certain number codes for $5, but this year they are not following that format. This year, you purchase a dollar amount starting at $10 that the recipient can use until it runs out.

      I hope this helps!

This is such a great idea!! But I can’t find the link to find the codes?! Do you just do the gift card through email? The cheapest one I could find was $10! Thanks for the help! This is perfect for big families!

      Hi Erica!

It turns out that RedBox has changed how they offer codes from when I originally posted this in 2012. The lowest amount they offer is $10, and it works like an iTunes gift card. An alternative could be an Amazon gift card, which can be purchased online in any increment! I hope this helps. I updated the post with more information for questions like this.

      Thank you!
