My very own “Pinterest Fail”

Let’s talk. For a while now I’ve been sick of my iPad case. It serves it’s purpose, but it’s boring. Just leather. Just black. Just blah. So, like any able-bodied crafter, I decided I’d give it a revamp. I saw this iPad cover by Free People and loved the feather print. Perfect opportunity for me to finally make some foam stamps, right?

You’ll see.

It all started off innocent enough. Prelim pics of the disaster that was about to strike.

Now — one thing that did turn out right? The feather foam stamps. Hopefully they’ll get used again.

And… yeah. Then this happened. I started by just printing the stamps haphazardly on the cover, but the acrylic paint + leather material + foam stamps just didn’t mesh well together. The stamps (with the acrylic paint) would work much better on paper or fabric — not leather. I got pissed (surprise) and just painted over everything to try a patterned look. Also failed.

Oh well. The phrase “can’t win ‘em all” also applies to crafting.

Have you ever started a project with good intentions and then watched as it quickly fell apart?

(If your answer is no, then I don’t believe you. Second thought: what are Martha Stewart’s failed projects?)

Rave on,

  1. I’m sorry it didn’t work. I actually think the case looked good with your touches though! I’ve had lots of DIY fails, but luckily, I’ve had some successes along the way too. :)

  2. Yep, tried to help a friend make these “easy” string and glue globes for her wedding. Total and epic fail (and we made a huge mess in the process–but that’s half the fun anyway, right?)

Yes! And I know the DIY you are talking about – I’ve seen it on Pinterest. Definitely looks easier that it probably was!

  3. I think the cover looks great but I understand… It seems like this happens to me all the time! I have a side table I’ve rehabbed ~ painted pink and sealed with a clear coat, and the clear coat looks awful!! I don’t know what to do with it! Grr!!

Maybe drape some fabric over it?! Most of the time other people never see the flaws in projects we obsess over. I take great comfort in this realization! :)

  4. It definitely could look way worse!! Who knows? Maybe it’ll grow on you… :)

    • sweet sarah says:

Haha, I am sure you are right! I went ahead and tossed it today though. Must purchase a new case asap! :)

  5. so much better than I would have done, that’s for sure! Now I want to make some foam stamps and just try it out on random things!!!

  6. Most of my crafting projects are fails! I think it looked good but I know when you have something in your mind and it doesn’t come out exactly right you hate it!

  7. At least you had the courage to try?! I adore the idea of craft projects (especially ones I see on pinterest) but I haven’t actually tried any yet.

    • sweet sarah says:

Thank you! Sometimes crafting does take courage – especially when things are going wrong, lol. Thank you so much for your comment!

  8. I don’t see it, I think it looks great! Did you create the stamps yourself? I am so intimidated to try that, but it seems like such an awesome skill!

    • sweet sarah says:

Yes! I have seen many DIYs around the internet for making your own stamps – I’m sure Pinterest is just crawling with them! It’s SUPER easy, just takes a little patience :) You should try it!
